Notes on Street Art: AliCè, MOR & Banksy

This charming video of a street artist found via Bruce Sterling illustrates several ideas about street art. #

First, the set up. This is why I always try to take two pictures of any piece of street art: one of the work and another of the work in its context. The whole decor gives us a lot of information. Here, for example, it tells us that the works are in public spots, and that these spots are rather derelict. #

The “derelict” part is important because it shows that this is not vandalism: it doesn’t destroy anything, it rather adds beauty in neglected parts of a neighborhood. Unless it is the very topic of their work, most artists are not in the destroying business. The word “vandalism” is vastly overused about street art. #

“Public” is also essential. It’s a characteristic of street art: the works are in the public domain. I intentionally use the double meaning of “public domain”: “public space” and “free to be photographed”. The video gives us a few glimpses into the amount of time and dedication involved in drawing, painting, cutting and gluing the work. But despite the valuable effort invested in it, it doesn’t come with any monetary value. #

Just there, the artist and the work make a huge statement: it is outside of the art market. It’s a gift: a gift to the public, to us. #

Ce charmant petit film découvert chez Bruce Sterling illustre plusieurs idées sur l’art urbain. #

D’abord, l’environnement. C’est pourquoi j’essaye toujours de prendre deux photos des oeuvres d’art urbain: une de l’oeuvre elle-même, l’autre de l’oeuvre en situation. L’environnement révèle beaucoup d’information. Ici, par exemple, nous voyons que les oeuvres sont dans des lieux public et sur des emplacements plutôt délabrés. #

Le “délabrement” est important puisqu’il montre qu’il ne s’agit pas de vandalisme: non seulement l’oeuvre ne détruit rien, mais elle ajoute plutôt de la beauté dans un coin abandonné du voisinage. Sauf si c’est le sujet même de leur oeuvre, la plupart des artistes ne cherchent pas à détruire. On abuse beaucoup du terme “vandalisme” à propos d’art urbain. #

“Public” est aussi un un élément essentiel. C’est une caractéristique de l’art urbain: les oeuvres sont dans le domaine public. Je fais exprès d’utiliser “domaine public” dans ses deux sens: “lieu public” et “libre d’être photographié”. Le video nous donne un aperçu du temps et du talent nécessaires pour réaliser l’oeuvre: dessin, peinture, découpage, collage. Malgré la valeur des efforts investis, aucune valeur monétaire n’est attachée à l’oeuvre. #

Par ce simple fait, l’artiste et l’oeuvre font une déclaration capitale: l’oeuvre est hors du marché de l’art. C’est un cadeau: un don au public, pour nous. #

The anonymity also makes a point. It’s not “real” anonymity in the sense that the works are signed “AliCè” and the author doesn’t hide: you can Google her name, find her flickr gallery, her Myspace page and even her real name. But while pasting her works, she doesn’t star in the video: she leaves all the room to her artwork. Whereas the art market is all about the signature, the personae of the artist, most street art leaves to the public, to you and me, the whole space to relate with the artwork and its surrounding. #

I know: all street artists are not so discreet. A few of them pose beside their work. Every artist choose what exposure they want. But for me the essence of street art is to discover a work and to live a moment of appreciation, of art, alone. There is the incongruous spot in a public place, there is something different, colors, a shape intended to surprise and create an emotion. There is nobody else standing there at this moment. This floating relationship with the work is part of the gift that we receive from these artists. #

Il ne s’agit pas d’anonymat “total” puisque les oeuvres sont signées “AliCè” et que l’auteur ne se cache pas: on peut chercher son nom sur Google, trouver sa galerie sur flickr, sa page sur Myspace et même son vrai nom. Mais quand on la voit afficher ses oeuvres, elle n’est pas le personnage principal du video: elle laisse toute la place à son art. Alors que le marché de l’art repose sur la signature et l’aura de l’artiste, la plupart des oeuvres d’art urbain laissent au passant, à vous et moi, tout l’espace pour apprécier l’oeuvre et son environnement. #

Je sais: tous les artistes urbains ne sont pas aussi discrets. Certains aiment poser près de leurs oeuvres. Il revient à chaque artiste de choisir ce qu’il révèle. Mais pour moi, l’essence de l’art urbain est la découverte fortuite d’une oeuvre et l’expérience solitaire d’un instant d’appréciation, d’art. Dans un lieu public, l’oeil est attiré par des formes et des couleurs insolites qui ont été placées pour surprendre et provoquer une émotion. Il n’y a personne d’autre à cet instant. Cette relation éphémère avec l’oeuvre fait partie du cadeau que nous recevons de ces artistes. #

And the work is left to the elements: it will be soaked by rain and faded by the sun if people don’t come first to tear it from the wall. Street art is perishable: it is made to die. As soon as it is finished, it begins to decay. Like us. Whereas most of art history and of the art market is about preservation of form and value, street art is alive. Compared to traditional artwork, street art is not stranger to us, it’s more familiar. Instead of standing inside the immortality glass box that we can’t inhabit, it stays alongside us for the ride, living and dying among us. #

And of course, there is the video, which is on YouTube, which is on the Web. Without the Web, there is no Banksy. Banksy is one of the most famous and significant street artists of our time. And his work lives through thousands of people taking pictures and posting them in galleries on the Web. Street art is an art of our time because it is a social art: the works are distributed and shown all over the world through the participation of countless people. #

Those people, like you and me, become then part of the work because we give back to these works the gift of permanence and eternity. In this way Bruce Sterling, then I, then you are part of Alicè’s work. The medium always brings with it an essential message. Here, it tells us that we are in it together. Street art is the representation of all the debates we are having about what is public and what is private: the music market, the copying of books and video, Creative Commons licenses, open software, open government, transparency, freemium. Welcome to the 21th century. #

Banksy

Et l’oeuvre est abandonnée aux éléments: elle sera trempée par la pluie, décolorée par le soleil si des gens ne l’arrachent pas d’abord. L’art urbain est périssable: il est créé pour mourir. Dès que l’oeuvre est finalisée, elle commence à se dégrader. Comme nous. Alors que l’Histoire de l’art et le marché de l’art reposent en grande partie sur la préservation de la forme et de la valeur, l’art urbain est vivant. Quand on le compare à l’art traditionnel, l’art urbain ne nous est pas plus étranger, il nous est plus familier. Au lieu de siéger dans la boite de verre de l’immortalité, l’art urbain nous accompagne en vivant et en mourant parmi nous. #

Et bien sur il y a le vidéo, qui est sur YouTube, qui est sur le Web. Sans le Web, il n’y a pas de Banksy. Banksy est l’un des artistes urbains les plus connus et les plus importants de notre époque. Et ses oeuvres vivent à travers les gens qui les prennent en photo et les postent sur des galeries sur le Web. L’art urbain est un art de notre temps parce que c’est un art social: les oeuvres sont diffusées et exposées dans le monde entier grâce à la participation de milliers de gens. #

Ces gens comme vous et moi deviennent alors partie intégrante de ces oeuvres en leur faisant à leur tour un cadeau: celui de la permanence et de l’éternité. Ainsi Bruce Sterling, puis moi, puis vous faisons partie de l’oeuvre d’Alicè. Le medium porte toujours en lui un message essentiel. Et le medium de cet art nous rappelle qu’on existe ensemble. L’art de rue est la représentation de tous les débats qui ont lieu sur ce qui est privé et ce qui est public: l’industrie de la musique, la reproduction des livres et des vidéos, les contrats sous Creative Commons, les logiciels libres, le gouvernement ouvert, la tansparence, la gratuité. Bienvenue dans le 21e siècle. #

Place des festivals

On my way to the show, I decided to walk through the new Place des Festivals in Montreal. I was not disappointed: this is a magnificent public space. There were already lovers, kids playing in the fountains and idlers on benches admiring the water show. A success! (Click on the image and then on “All sizes” to see it larger.) #

En allant à l’expo j’ai voulu passer par la nouvelle Place des Festivals de Montréal. Je n’ai pas été déçu: c’est un splendide espace public. Il y avait déjà des amoureux, des enfants jouant dans les jets d’eau et des flaneurs sur les bancs regardant le spectacle aquatique. Une réussite! On a warm late afternoon, it was perfect: the fountains were refreshing the air and the water show was very inventive, playful and spectacular. I think it’s the first time I have seen, or rather heard, rhythms played using a fountain. We would like to know the names of these artists who compose sculptures that are lively, liquid and resounding. #

En fin d’après midi d’une belle journée, les fontaines rafraichissaient l’air ambiant et le jeu des jets d’eau était très original, ludique et spectaculaire. C’est je crois la première fois que je vois, ou plutôt que j’entend, jouer des rythmes avec des jets d’eau. On aimerait connaître le nom de ces artistes qui composent des sculptures vivantes, liquides et sonores. #

Later that evening, coming back from the show, I could not resist to walk again through the Place in the opposite direction; this time charmed by the play
of red and white colored lights in the water jets. #

Plus tard dans la soirée en revenant de l’expo, je n’ai pas résisté à l’idée de retraverser la place dans l’autre sens, et cette fois j’ai été charmé par les jeux de couleurs rouge et blanc dans les jets d’eau. #

Il y a encore beaucoup de questions à se poser pour le futur: qu’est-ce qui va se passer en hiver? Que faire avec les maisons banales du côté sud? Comment le Musée d’art contemporain va-t-il mettre en valeur cette façade “arrière” qui se trouve soudain en vedette? Et on aimerait en savoir beaucoup plus sur le spectacle aquatique: qui décide ce qui est “joué” quand? Il y a de long moments où rien ne se passe et il n’y a aucune information disponible nulle part, même pas sur Internet. #

The future still holds many questions, like what will happen in winter? What to do with the uninteresting houses on the South side? How will the Museum of Contemporary Art use its “backside” which suddently becomes prominent in a new landscape? We also want to know a lot more about the water show: who decides what is “played” and when? Sometimes the fountains sleep for long periods and there is no information available anywhere, even online. #

Il faudra revenir sur la place et imaginer ce que l’on va pouvoir créer sur Internet à son sujet, mais pour l’instant, il faut chaleureusement remercier les décideurs et féliciter les architectes Daoust Lestage pour cet oeuvre d’art. (Désolé de vous envoyer dans ce tas de Flash, mais tant qu’ils réussissent leurs places publiques…). Ce n’est pas tous les jours que notre ville peut se réjouir de recevoir un espace d’une telle qualité d’architecture urbaine, majestueuse et conviviale. La dernière fois, c’était lors de la Grande Bibliothèque. Tout n’est pas perdu. #

We will have to come back to the Place and to imagine what can be created on the Web about it, but for now, we must warmly thank the decision makers and congratulate the architects, Daoust Lestage, for this work of art. (Sorry to link to the pile of Flash, but as long as they make great public spaces…). It’s not everyday that our city can rejoice in receiving a space of such urban, majestic and friendly architectural quality; the last time was for the Grande Bibliothèque. All is not lost. #

Near the railways, in St-Henri, Montreal, June 08. #

A few days later, after heavy rains, the work had vanished. I finally found a mass of paper among the weeds: I suppose it had been unglued by the rain then rolled around by the wind. I took it and unfold it, it was a little torn but not too much. An artist friend loved it at first sight and is keeping it safe on her bedroom wall. If the author recognizes it, please do not hesitate to contact me. #

I can identify maps of Israel (twice), ???, Alberta, maybe California plus something else North (Cascadia?). The urban grids in the background spell “THEFT”, so this is political art and should help identify the missing countries. #

Thanks to troy and teg from MetaFilter, we have now the complete riddle: #

Israel, Israel, South Africa, Alberta, Haldimand Tract. #

Since the Haldimand Tract is in Ontario, Canada, and since the Haldimand Proclamation was made in Québec in 1784, we can surmise that the topic of the poster is the Grand River land dispute. #

Quelques jours plus tard, après des pluies abondantes, l’oeuvre avait disparu. En m’approchant, j’ai fini par trouver dans l’herbe une boule de papier, sans doute décollée par la pluie et enroulée par le vent. Je l’ai récupérée, un peu abimée, et l’ai prêtée à une amie artiste qui l’avait adoré sur le champ. Si l’auteur reconnaît son oeuvre, n’hésitez pas à me contacter. #

On reconnaît les cartes d’Israel (2 fois), ???, Alberta, Californie + ??? et les lettres “THEFT” dessinées par des cartes urbaines. #

It does gives me pause that 26 of the 36 artists have master’s degrees in fine arts from respected universities or art schools. I think most of them should ask for their money back. On the evidence here, at least, they have only a meager understanding of what being an artist entails. #
“How Soon Is Now?” suggests that there is no point in spending time on “professional development” or learning how to advance one’s work in the marketplace if artistic development is not well under way. That requires lots of long, hard looking at all kinds of art, in all mediums, from all periods and cultures. Aspiring artists need to expose themselves to the sheer intensity and variety of art, to learn what they love, what they hate and if they are actually artists at all. New York’s galleries and especially its great museums offer ample opportunity for this kind of self-education, which leads to self-knowledge. Anything is possible when artists set to work knowing they have something they urgently need to say, in a way it hasn’t quite been said before. #
