Near the railways, in St-Henri, Montreal, June 08. #

A few days later, after heavy rains, the work had vanished. I finally found a mass of paper among the weeds: I suppose it had been unglued by the rain then rolled around by the wind. I took it and unfold it, it was a little torn but not too much. An artist friend loved it at first sight and is keeping it safe on her bedroom wall. If the author recognizes it, please do not hesitate to contact me. #

I can identify maps of Israel (twice), ???, Alberta, maybe California plus something else North (Cascadia?). The urban grids in the background spell “THEFT”, so this is political art and should help identify the missing countries. #

Thanks to troy and teg from MetaFilter, we have now the complete riddle: #

Israel, Israel, South Africa, Alberta, Haldimand Tract. #

Since the Haldimand Tract is in Ontario, Canada, and since the Haldimand Proclamation was made in Québec in 1784, we can surmise that the topic of the poster is the Grand River land dispute. #

Quelques jours plus tard, après des pluies abondantes, l’oeuvre avait disparu. En m’approchant, j’ai fini par trouver dans l’herbe une boule de papier, sans doute décollée par la pluie et enroulée par le vent. Je l’ai récupérée, un peu abimée, et l’ai prêtée à une amie artiste qui l’avait adoré sur le champ. Si l’auteur reconnaît son oeuvre, n’hésitez pas à me contacter. #

On reconnaît les cartes d’Israel (2 fois), ???, Alberta, Californie + ??? et les lettres “THEFT” dessinées par des cartes urbaines. #

Puisque le Haldimand Tract est en Ontario, Canada, et puisque la Déclaration de Haldimand a été faite à Québec en 1784, on peut supposer que le sujet de l’affiche est le conflit territorial de Caledonia (plus d’info en angalis à Grand River land dispute). #

This is another try at playing only with images. All are from the “bomb” series by the anonymous artist who signs MOR (click on any images to access the flickr galleries). This time I tried a progression (from top to bottom) as in an animation. It’s a work in progress: I may add or change images any time. #

Un nouvel essai avec seulement des images. Celles-ci viennent toutes de la série de bombes par l’artiste qui signe MOR (en cliquant sur n’importe quelle image, on accède aux galeries sur flickr). Cette fois-ci, je les ai placées dans un ordre (de haut en bas) comme dans une animation. Je continue à changer l’ordre ou les images de temps en temps. #

This is an experiment: I first tried to tell a story with pictures of my first Spring walk in Montreal alleyways. Then I decided to delete all the words and to let the images stand by themselves. #

Je continue à faire des essais: ici j’ai d’abord essayer de raconter ma première promenade du prinemps dans les ruelles de Montréal, puis j’ai décidé d’enlever tous les mots et de laisser les images parler toutes seules. #

In my Montreal neighborhood, I have taken hundreds of pictures of the stencil works of the artist who signs MOR. His work has been – and still is – the highlight of my walks in Plateau Mont-Royal back alleys. I have never met him but he has commented my pictures on flickr. I have not found a way to order clearly the 800 pictures or so I have posted (more are coming) on flickr, so I have decided to post a few of them here from time to time, ordered by tags. #

It is fitting to begin this visual blog with images of his cameras. I know MOR is revolted by the possibility of a police state that spies on us everywhere. He is a freedom activist. But his camera also symbolizes for me the fact that we see too, what happens everywhere. The state may watch us but we can watch the state. And, mainly, we can watch so much more than the state. MOR, as a political artist, tells us that he wants to contribute to our vigilance. But as the great artist that I think he is, he contributes to make us aware of beauty in the most surprising places and about the most unexpected topics. #

Dans mon quartier, à Montréal, j’ai pris des centaines de photos des pochoirs de l’artiste qui signe MOR. La découverte de ses oeuvres a été – et est encore – pour moi un des grands plaisirs de mes explorations des ruelles du Plateau Mont-Royal. Je ne l’ai jamais rencontré, mais il a commenté mes photos sur flickr. Je n’ai pas encore trouvé la bonne façon de présenter les (environ) 800 images que j’ai postées sur flickr (d’autres vont s’y ajouter), donc j’ai décidé d’en poster ici de temps en temps, rangées par thèmes. #

Je ne pouvais mieux choisir pour commencer ce blog visuel que des images des caméras de MOR. Je sais qu’il est révolté par la perspective d’un état policier qui observerait nos moindres gestes. Il est un militant de la liberté. Mais ses caméras symbolisent également pour moi que nous aussi, nous voyons désormais ce qui se passe partout. Peut-être que l’état nous regarde, mais nous pouvons tout autant voir ce que fait l’état. Et surtout, nous pouvons voir tellement plus que l’état. L’artiste politique MOR nous dit qu’il veut contribuer à nous rendre vigilants. Mais, comme le grand artiste qu’il est, il contribue à nous rendre attentifs à la beauté dans les endroits les plus surprenants et à propos de sujets les plus inattendus. #
