referring of course to Christo’s & Jeanne-Claude’s The Gates.

At the same time, I had been strucked by a much more disturbing collision of images from Christo & Jeanne-Claude.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has brought so much pain and destruction that I didn’t dare to bring art into it until today.

I have had these images since May 24, 2010. Four months later, they still haunt me.

In my mind, these two pictures are an incredibly dramatic, yet elegant echo of this work of art, created 27 years ago:

Trouvé ici via Mathew Haughey et ça vient de Urban Farm Store (un site pour amateurs de poules urbaines) mais je n’ai pas trouvé le crédit de la photo originale sur le site.

Je viens du lancement du dernier roman noir d’André Marois: Sa propre mort, où j’ai attrapé un bout d’entrevue improvisée juste avant que la foule n’arrive:

I just came back from the launch party for Sa propre mort (“Her Own Death“), a novel by my friend André Marois. André is a great writer of noir fiction. I know no other writer whose characters kill with such spontaneous ease. In this (short-short) vidéo, several voices ask him if it’s a horror story or a vengeance one.

His answer: “Horror? No, I don’t write horror, I tell noir stories.”

I ask him: “But on your promo video, it seems to be dark, dark, dark.”

André: “It’s a vengeance. There is killing, there is killing, there must be killing.”

Les corridas ne sont pas un bon sujet.
Tous mes amis des bêtes vont hurler.

Mais le premier sujet qui m’intéresse ici, c’est l’art de raconter des histoires.
Depuis des années, nytimes.com a perfectionné l’art de raconter des histoires avec quelques diapositives accompagnées de textes. C’est un art difficile et pas toujours réussi; parfois il faut se référer à l’article original ou encore les photos ne sont guères passionnantes.
Mais de temps en temps surgit une perle où un maître agence de très bonnes images et un texte bien écrit pour évoquer avec souffle, émotion et information la beauté d’un moment.

C’est le cas ici, avec les photos de Carlos Cazalis et le texte de Michael Kimmelman. Comme c’est malheureusement l’usage, le “maître” qui a réalisé le montage reste dans l’ombre. Je recommande de prendre quelques minutes pour aller voir et lire. Il s’agit d’un événement dramatique: non seulement d’une corrida, mais sans doute la dernière en pays catalan, avec le dernier grand matador. Les arguments des opposants, qui vont probablement gagner, ne sont pas esquivés. Mais toutes les émotions historiques autour de ces instants surgissent en quelques images et quelques mots.

Magnifique.

Bullfighting is not a good topic.
All my PETA friends have already started howling.

But the topic I am interested in here is the art of storytelling.
For years, nytimes.com has perfected the art of telling stories with a few slides accompanied by a few lines of text. It’s a difficult art and not always successful. Sometimes you have to go back to the original article, other times the photos are not all that special. But from time to time, there appears a jewel, where a master edits great images with a well-written text to summon the beauty of a moment with spirit, emotion and information.

This is the case here, with photos by Carlos Cazalis and a story written by Michael Kimmelman. I recommend spending a few moments with this slideshow. Unfortunately, as is customary, the “master” editor remains in the shadows. The story is a dramatic event: not only is it a bullfight, but it is probably the last great one in Catalonia, with the last great matador. The opponents of the fights will probably win and their arguments are well-presented. But all the historical emotions surrounding such a moment are evoked by a few images and a few words.

Magnificent.

What moves me particularly is not the pictures of a bullfight: we can undoubtedly find thousands of others with a few clicks. These photos, however, resonate with the way Kimmelman artfully cites not only historical facts, but mythological rituals and, for me, personal experiences.

I was born near Lascaux Caves, in the South West of France. With my parents, I had the opportunity to visit the caves several times as a kid, before they were closed to the public. Childhood memories and ancestral feelings bubble up. I still remember the cold, the dampness, and the quasi-religious reverence: like we were privileged to have a glimpse of a secret underground cathedral painted by our great-great-great-great grand-parents.

Then, years later, I was invited by my uncle Louis-Henri and my aunt Claude to a bullfight in Toulouse. I was, at first, disgusted and skeptical, as you probably are. So I was very, very surprised when I found myself enthralled by the spectacle, chanting with the crowd, an active participant in the ceremony. I was not taking sides for the bull or for the matador. I was just drawn into something that felt like an ancient ritual of which I was a natural and devoted member. Who knows? Maybe deep in the recesses of our genes there are traces of the fear of the bulls. Maybe there are echoes of the celebrations that our tribes performed when we fought and killed one of these giants. After all, bulls, under the name of Apis, Tarvos, Bata, Tilla, Minotaur, Moloch, Agurzil and so many others, were once our gods.

What makes a story great is how much it touches us. Thus this beautiful slideshow from nytimes.com depicting one of the last acts of this millenarian ritual makes me pay my respects to my childhood, to my ancestors, to our human history and to these former foes who have become our loyal companions and to this day give us milk, cheese and hamburgers.

Ce ne sont pas les photos de corrida qui m’émeuvent: on peut sans doute en trouver des milliers d’autres en quelques clics. Mais ces photos résonnent ici avec l’art de Kimmelman d’évoquer non seulement des événements historiques mais aussi d’antiques rituels et, pour moi, des expériences personnelles.

Je suis né non loin des Grottes de Lascaux, dans le sud-ouest de la France. Avec mes parents, j’ai eu la chance de les visiter plusieurs fois pendant mon enfance, avant qu’elles ne soient fermées au public. De lointaines impressions remontent à la surface. Je me souviens encore du froid, de l’humidité et d’un sentiment de révérence quasi-religieuse: comme si nous avions le privilège de jeter un oeil dans une cathédrale souterraine secrète peinte par nos arrière-arrière-arrière-arrière grands parents.

Des années plus tard j’ai été invité par mon oncle Louis-Henri et ma tante Claude à une corrida à Toulouse. J’étais de prime abord dégoûté et sceptique, comme vous l’êtes sans doute. Je fus donc très, très surpris quand je me suis retrouvé emporté par le spectacle, criant avec la foule, en train de participer activement à la cérémonie. Je n’encourageais pas le taureau ni le matador. J’étais juste aspiré dans une sorte d’ancien rituel dont j’étais tout naturellement un membre enthousiaste. Qui sait? Peut-être la peur des aurochs a-telle laissé des traces dans les confins de nos gênes? Peut-être y reste-t-il l’écho des cérémonies que célébraient nos tribus après avoir vaincu et tué l’un de ces géants? Après tout, sous les noms d’Apis, Tarvos, Bata, Tilla, Minotaur, Moloch, Agurzil et tant d’autres, les taureaux furent un jour nos dieux.

Le propre des histoires bien racontées est qu’elles nous touchent. Ainsi, cette histoire du nytimes.com qui raconte une des dernières célébrations d’un rituel millénaire me donne l’occasion de saluer mon enfance, mes ancêtres, notre histoire humaine et ces anciens ennemis devenus nos fidèles nourricières qui nous donnent encore lait, fromages et steak-frites.

On my way to the show, I decided to walk through the new Place des Festivals in Montreal. I was not disappointed: this is a magnificent public space. There were already lovers, kids playing in the fountains and idlers on benches admiring the water show. A success! (Click on the image and then on “All sizes” to see it larger.)

En allant à l’expo j’ai voulu passer par la nouvelle Place des Festivals de Montréal. Je n’ai pas été déçu: c’est un splendide espace public. Il y avait déjà des amoureux, des enfants jouant dans les jets d’eau et des flaneurs sur les bancs regardant le spectacle aquatique. Une réussite! On a warm late afternoon, it was perfect: the fountains were refreshing the air and the water show was very inventive, playful and spectacular. I think it’s the first time I have seen, or rather heard, rhythms played using a fountain. We would like to know the names of these artists who compose sculptures that are lively, liquid and resounding.

En fin d’après midi d’une belle journée, les fontaines rafraichissaient l’air ambiant et le jeu des jets d’eau était très original, ludique et spectaculaire. C’est je crois la première fois que je vois, ou plutôt que j’entend, jouer des rythmes avec des jets d’eau. On aimerait connaître le nom de ces artistes qui composent des sculptures vivantes, liquides et sonores.

Later that evening, coming back from the show, I could not resist to walk again through the Place in the opposite direction; this time charmed by the play
of red and white colored lights in the water jets.

Plus tard dans la soirée en revenant de l’expo, je n’ai pas résisté à l’idée de retraverser la place dans l’autre sens, et cette fois j’ai été charmé par les jeux de couleurs rouge et blanc dans les jets d’eau.

Il y a encore beaucoup de questions à se poser pour le futur: qu’est-ce qui va se passer en hiver? Que faire avec les maisons banales du côté sud? Comment le Musée d’art contemporain va-t-il mettre en valeur cette façade “arrière” qui se trouve soudain en vedette? Et on aimerait en savoir beaucoup plus sur le spectacle aquatique: qui décide ce qui est “joué” quand? Il y a de long moments où rien ne se passe et il n’y a aucune information disponible nulle part, même pas sur Internet.

The future still holds many questions, like what will happen in winter? What to do with the uninteresting houses on the South side? How will the Museum of Contemporary Art use its “backside” which suddently becomes prominent in a new landscape? We also want to know a lot more about the water show: who decides what is “played” and when? Sometimes the fountains sleep for long periods and there is no information available anywhere, even online.

Il faudra revenir sur la place et imaginer ce que l’on va pouvoir créer sur Internet à son sujet, mais pour l’instant, il faut chaleureusement remercier les décideurs et féliciter les architectes Daoust Lestage pour cet oeuvre d’art. (Désolé de vous envoyer dans ce tas de Flash, mais tant qu’ils réussissent leurs places publiques…). Ce n’est pas tous les jours que notre ville peut se réjouir de recevoir un espace d’une telle qualité d’architecture urbaine, majestueuse et conviviale. La dernière fois, c’était lors de la Grande Bibliothèque. Tout n’est pas perdu.

We will have to come back to the Place and to imagine what can be created on the Web about it, but for now, we must warmly thank the decision makers and congratulate the architects, Daoust Lestage, for this work of art. (Sorry to link to the pile of Flash, but as long as they make great public spaces…). It’s not everyday that our city can rejoice in receiving a space of such urban, majestic and friendly architectural quality; the last time was for the Grande Bibliothèque. All is not lost.

On va se voir à Place des Festivals, le nouveau rendez-vous des Montréalais.

Hier soir je suis allé au lancement de l’exposition “Illustrateur en série” organisée par mon ami Alain Reno avec six autres artistes. Chaque artiste a fait de 2 à 4 sérigraphies spécialement pour cette occasion.

L’ensemble est splendide. La matière donnée par la sérigraphie et le ton des couleurs créent une unité malgré la diversité des styles. On sent aussi une famille d’auteurs, tous et toutes des maîtres qui travaillent de Montréal mais dont les oeuvres paraissent régulièrement aux États-Unis et en Europe, depuis Playboy ou le New York Times jusqu’aux livres d’enfants. Les sérigraphies sont numérotées et sont à vendre séparément ou par série par artiste, encadrées ou non encadrées.

Tous sont des illustrateurs de renom mais ces oeuvres ont été réalisées pour leur plaisir personnel. J’aime le côté pop-art de la matière et la philosophie de la série limitée qui permet de rendre ces oeuvres abordables pour tous. Je ne saurais trop recommander d’aller faire main basse sur ces splendeurs, d’abord pour vous-mêmes et ensuite pour vos cadeaux de Noël. Ou encore pour me faire des cadeaux: j’aimerais les avoir toutes. S’il vous plaît. :-)

Last night I was at the launching party of “Illustrateur en série”, a show curated by my friend Alain Reno with six other artists. Each artist has created 2 to 4 original silkscreens for the show.

The whole set is splendid. The grain and the colors given by the silkscreen process create an impression of unity despite the diversity of styles. There is also a feeling that this is a family of artists, all masters of their craft who work from Montreal but whose images are published regularly in the States and in Europe, from Playboy or the New York Times to children books. The works are all numbered and can be bought as single or as series by author, framed or not.

All are renown illustrators, but they have created these series for their own enjoyment. I like the pop-art feel of silkscreen and the limited series philosophy which allows to make works of such quality affordable for all. I can’t recommend enough to go there and make a run for these marvels, first for yourself and then for your coming Christmas gifts. Or you can give me a few: I would love to have them all. Please. :-)

I couldn’t recommend enough the series of 7 “overtures” by Catherine Genest (“Ouvert” is French for “Open”, as shown in the last video of the series). This is a fresh, delightful, very inventive idea that is worth developing, multiplying, imitating. I love readymades, urban art, light as object – especially neon -, movement and music (when it’s joyful ;-)). I hope there will be new ones in the near future.
