Bravo, Police & Merci

En passant sur la rue Napoléon jeudi dernier (18 février), je vois 7 ou 8 voitures de police, portes ouvertes, et plein de policiers alentour. Je m’attends à du grabuge. Mais non, ils laissent passer des piétons sur le trottoir. Je m’approche. Tous les policiers parlent entre eux avec animation et ont l’air de bonne humeur.
Je croise une jeune dame qui commente la scène à l’enfant de 6 ou 7 ans qu’elle tient par la main. Je lui demande: “Savez-vous ce qui se passe?” “Non, me dit-elle, mais j’expliquais à mon fils que les policiers viennent sans doute d’attraper la personne qui conduisait la voiture noire.”
L’enfant me regarde, l’oeil à la fois ravi et inquisiteur, genre “Est-ce que je vois réellement un épisode de flics et bandits?” Un policier passe non loin de nous. Je lui pose la question. “On faisait une poursuite, dit-il, et on a attrapé le conducteur de la voiture noire.” Je le remercie, il continue son chemin et j’aperçois dans l’oeil de l’enfant le passage de l’interrogation à la validation du sens de l’observation de sa mère. Je dis à la jeune femme: “Félicitations.” À cet instant le policier se retourne et me dit: “Merci!”
Hahaha! Pourquoi pas? Je ne le détrompe pas mais me sens assez à l’aise pour sortir ma caméra.
Last Thursday (February 18th), as I was walking on Napoleon Street in Montreal, I saw 7 or 8 police cars, doors wide open and a whole group of police men and women. Was it dangerous? Apparently not: they let other people through. As I approached, I could see that the police people were talking happily among themselves.
Nearby, on the sidewalk, a young woman was holding the hand of a 6 or 7 years old child and was commenting the scene. I asked her: “Do you know what’s going on?” “No, she said, but I was telling my son that I believe the police just caught the driver of the black car.”
The kid looked at me, at the same time in awe and inquisitive, kinda “Am I really witnessing a cops and robbers event?” A policeman walked by, so I asked him: “There had been a car chase, he said, and we finally caught the driver of the black car.” I thanked him, he walked away, and I caught in the kid’s eye the shift from doubt to the validation of his mother’s observation. So I said to the woman: “Congratulations.” Then the policeman turned around and told me: “Thank you!”
Hahaha! Why not? I didn’t correct him but I felt safe enough to take out my camera.
